Jennifer Hudson is one of People magazine’s 2022 People of the Year. In a new interview for the issue, the singer, actress, and talk show host opened up about not winning American Idol, as well as her goal of releasing another album.

Jennifer Hudson Reflects on Not Winning American Idol

Hudson competed on Season 3 of American Idol in 2004, coming in seventh place. Despite not even being in the finale, the singer has found amazing success in various industries. Hudson told People that missing out on the title taught her something important.

“There’s a lesson in everything,” Hudson shared. “Nothing is just, like, ‘Oh you just placed seventh.’ That was a platform that allowed me to be seen and prepared me for what was to come. Everything leads to the next in some capacity. You may not get what you think you’re supposed to out of it, but it will help prepare you for what you will have eventually.”

That includes Hudson’s EGOT status. As of earlier this year, the star has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She called it “a huge honor” and “an ongoing celebration,” adding, “It puts me in a better position to be able to lend more support.”

Hudson Wants to Release Another Album

When asked what she has left on her bucket list, Hudson listed several goals. She wants to direct something, play the piano more, and go on tour again. As she discussed on her talk show with Robin Thicke earlier this year, her last tour was in 2009.

Another thing Hudson wants to do is release another album. This is a big deal, since the singer’s last non-soundtrack album was the 2014 title JHUD. Last year, she released a soundtrack to the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, but we haven’t heard a totally original album from the singer in a long time.

Hudson is obviously busy these days, as she’s hosting The Jennifer Hudson Show. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t planning for the future. As she told People of her bucket list, “By the time I get out of this chair, I’ll have something else.”
